Overall timeline of Massawepie history before and during the Scout era

Childwold & the Hotel

History of Childwold, its founder Addison Child, and the Childwold Park Hotel (later Hotel Childwold) that operated at Massawepie during 1890-1909

Sykes Era: 1917-1951

The Sykes family, who ran the Emporium Forestry Company and Grasse River Railroad in Conifer, also owned Massawepie

Purchase by the Scouts: 1948-51

Events leading up to the 1951 purchase of Massawepie by the Otetiana Council, BSA

New April, 2025: Building and Opening Camp Pioneer: 1951-52

Funding Massawepie (1951), Building Pioneer (1951-52), and Operating the first summer camp (1952)

New May, 2025: From One Camp to Three: 1953-59

Building Mountaineer (1952-53), Building Voyageur (1956-59), Raising more funds, and Operating three camps

New July, 2025: Peak Summer Camp Years: the 1960s

Annual attendance grows to over 3000 Scouts; Forester (4th camp) opens in 1969 on Deer Pond

New October, 2025: From Four Camps to Two: the 1970s

Pioneer and Voyageur are closed as camp attendance drops, but Mountaineer and Forester keep going strong

New December, 2025; updated February, 2026: Two Rival Camps: the 1980s

Troops and staff enjoy having camp options: Mountaineer (dining hall) or Forester (patrol cooking)
